Stevenson D.J. pumped up by energy of crowd

TOYOTA PARK — Headed for his senior year at Stevenson High School, Ross Bessinger received an education in musical performance and the music business this weekend, when he took part in the Boom D.J. Battle at Toyota Park. One of the warm-up events to top-40 radio station B96’s summer concert on Saturday night, the battle pitted Bessinger, who goes by the name D.J. Mixerman, against turntablists from elsewhere in Chicago and Orange County, Calif.

A few months ago I helped chaperone a 14-year-old's birthday party. When I arrived at the party, I could hear the music pulsating through the house and then various sound checks going on. I was totally surprised to find a student deejay and an entire sound mixing station in the basement.
